How I’m Navigating my Final Year of University

If someone could tell me where the last 3 years have gone, that would be great. I can’t believe that I will (hopefully!) be graduating in the summer. It only seems like yesterday that I was actually getting ready to embark on the big adventure as such. Who knew I was going to fall in love with the city of Birmingham? (Not everyone’s cup of tea though I know).

Final year can bring quite a bit of pressure. It feels like time is running out and you’ve got deadlines, seminar reading, class tests, job applications, friendships, fun, health and wellness all to juggle in one go. Talk about spinning a few plates at a time. Mainly it’s pressure that I’m putting on myself, I want to get the best grades possible but have the best time too. I’m getting by (I think?), so here’s how I’m attempting to navigate my final year at university.

Plan plan plan. If you’ve read this blog for a while, I think you’ll have sussed that I love a good plan. But genuinely take a step back, work out your academic timetable, schedule in exercise, seeing friends and time for job applications. Hopefully, this will first of all leave your head a little clearer. By the way check that timetable, I’ve learnt over the years that lectures might not always been in the same place every week!

Keeping the stress at bay. This one doesn’t always go to plan, as unfortunately final year is going to be stressful in one way or another. But the aim is to avoid the dreaded burn out and try to test out a few different methods to reduce stress. Whether that’s exercise, setting aside time to relax and watch Netflix, going out for a nice meal, whatever works best can be used to your advantage!

Embracing the nights in. I do still enjoy a night out, going for drinks, mini golf, cinema you name it, but I’ve fully accepted that I’ve become a bit of a grandma, preferring to be in my pyjamas and retreat to my room for a cup of tea in bed after a long day at uni. I think I can still be fun though?

Mindfulness. I actually cannot stress enough that you need to do what works best for you. What makes you feel better in terms of work ethic, sleep, fun etc? These all contribute to having a bit more peace in your mind, for me, I prefer getting up early and attempting to do some work first thing because I feel most productive but that means I want to go to bed earlier than everyone else. I’m also here to point that even if it seems like everyone has got it together and you feel like you’re stuck on a hamster wheel, stop playing the comparison game and focus on you and your modules as we strive towards achieving this degree!!

So I want to say here’s to making the most of the next term, but in reality that’s just 11 weeks. Sounds like a long time but before you know it I’ll be 22, finishing my dissertation and revising for summer exams, yay. We’ll park that thought for now, here’s to taking one day at a time.
