Why It’s Important to Take a Step Back

Hello! As you know, my name is Im and I’ve been writing in this space on the internet for around two years now. Time has flown. I’m writing this post as a mini ‘re-introduction’ and as the title suggests, I took a step back and reconsidered why I started this blog and what I want to write about.

If you’ve read this blog from pretty much the beginning, you’ll see that it started out as a travel diary as I had an interailing trip around Europe, back in 2018. Then, as I’ve been a student for last four years, my writing has featured documentation of student lifestyle and pretty much everything in-between. I wouldn’t blame you if you felt my blog post topics jumped from one to the next. But, I love this blog, I love the freedom I have to write. For me to discuss topics, share ‘tips & tricks’ and chat my favourite beauty products or skincare routine, it’s not difficult to border onto a thousand words.

The COVID-19 lockdown has given me plenty of time to focus on my blog, my writing style and overall instilled my passion to write. I’m sure many other bloggers will agree, it’s given us the time to be ‘full-time bloggers’, to live and breathe our writing, our social media channels and to really get into the nooks and crannies of how we could do this more than we had time for previously.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved the content that I’ve written lately. But taking a step back was important to ensure that I could properly think about my ‘WHY’. Why am I writing? Why do I use social media channels for my blog? Why do I put pressure on myself to write a blog post every week? I came to the conclusion that actually there was nothing wrong with my answers to ‘Why am I doing this?’ and I will continue to use social media channels, continue to post once a week but I needed some change to make it work better.

So, lets chat about the change, the re-introduction that I mentioned. I want to re-introduce creativity to this blog, the general chit-chat will resume but as my stats tell me that you, my blog followers, value the blog posts where I have put the most thought into writing. The ones where I pick up my pen and scribble down a page of thoughts. I’m going to listen and take this forward, remove the pressure of generating content and come back to ‘WHY’ – why do I want to write about that particular topic?

I’d like to say thank you, for continuing to read my blog (and this current ramble). And I hope that you will continue to enjoy the change too.

I would also love to know what you’d like to read, because it’s not all about the stats. It’s about writing something that may resonate with you as readers, potentially provide some insight, some recommendations but overall the aim is for you to enjoy reading. In another element of change, I think I’d like to start a monthly ‘self-care’ email newsletter; to feature a reflection on the month, a few self-care tips, what I’ve been loving (ETC..), but this needs some thought so bare with me.

So to conclude – stepping back is important and if lockdown has taught us anything to take into the ‘new normal’, it’s that we don’t have to be going 100 miles an hour. I took a step back and I hope this reconsideration will help my blog flourish in times to come.

There’s nothing wrong with two steps forward, three steps back as long as you know the direction you want to go.’
